How do braces work?

Braces work by applying continuous, gentle pressure to the teeth in order to move them into the desired position over time. There are several components that make up this effective treatment:

How do braces work?
Brackets:

Brackets can be made from metal, ceramic, or plastic and are bonded to each tooth to hold the archwire and guide the teeth.

Archwire:

This is a thin wire that connects the brackets and applies pressure on the teeth.

Ligatures:

These are small elastic bands that help to hold the archwire in place within the brackets.

Elastics:

small rubber bands can also be used to correct bite and alignment issues.

Once you are fitted with braces, all of these components work together to move your teeth into position. The archwire will continue to be adjusted and tightened throughout treatment until the desired results are achieved.

Brace treatment is a proven method for straightening teeth, which is why it has been used for hundreds of years. For more information on the different types of braces we offer at The Bachmayer Orthodontic Clinic, take a look at our treatments section.
