What is orthognathic surgery?

What is
orthognathic surgery?

Orthognathic surgery is a specialised form of dental surgery that focuses on repositioning the jaws into proper alignment. It effectively corrects severe jaw misalignments, TMJ disorders, or malocclusions that cannot be addressed with orthodontic treatment alone.

In addition to improving function, orthognathic surgery helps achieve proper facial harmony. By repositioning the jaw, the surrounding soft tissues – including the nose, cheeks, and lips – adjust naturally, creating a more balanced and desirable facial aesthetic.

Who needs
jaw surgery?

An ideal candidate for jaw surgery is someone who has greatly misaligned jaws, bite problems, or a facial imbalance due to the position of their jaws. Surgery may also be recommended for more complex cases where orthodontic treatment alone will not achieve desirable results.

How do orthodontics and
jaw surgery work together?

Orthodontics will generally be the first step in treatment. Brace treatment will be performed for the first 12 months to properly align the teeth, after which surgery will be implemented if necessary.

The treatment duration with orthognathic surgery is approximately 18 months. By combining surgery and orthodontics, we are able to maximise your facial and dental aesthetics and ensure the best results for severe or complex cases.

Benefits of
jaw surgery

Through a combination of orthodontic treatment and jaw surgery, patients can experience the following benefits:

  • Proper alignment of the jaw

  • Improved facial aesthetic

  • Better oral health and dental function

  • Enhanced chewing and biting

  • Additional space in the mouth, enabling future orthodontics to be more effective

Dr. Helen Moon is an orthodontist who has taken the scenic route to perfecting smiles. After earning her Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours) from the University of Queensland, she moved halfway across the globe to complete a Master of Science in Orthodontics at the University of Manitoba. She's now qualified as a specialist orthodontist in Australia, Canada, and the USA because why settle for one country when you can have three?

Her research has been featured at international conferences, and she's a fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and a member of the AAO (American Association of Orthodontists) and CAO (Canadian Association of Orthodontists).

Dr. Moon is passionate about providing evidence-based, personalised care, with a special interest in digital orthodontics and clear aligner therapy. She has also completed the Aligner Intensive Fellowship, an advanced training program in aligner treatment, ensuring her patients benefit from the latest techniques in orthodontic care. With a knack for spotting the little details that make a big difference, she loves helping patients achieve smiles they’re proud to show off.

During her time in Canada, Dr. Moon embraced the cold with skiing, chasing the northern lights, and surviving temperatures that could freeze your eyelashes. Now back in sunny Sydney, she’s swapped snow for sand and spends her time playing tennis, scuba diving, and enjoying life without five layers of clothing.
