Why should my child see an orthodontist?

Why should my child
see an orthodontist?

The Australian Society of Orthodontists recommends children have their first orthodontic assessment by the age of seven. While this may be too early for braces, an early assessment allows our Specialist Orthodontists at The Bachmayer Orthodontic Clinic to detect potential issues before they become more complex.

Early intervention can guide jaw growth, correct harmful habits, and simplify future treatments - giving your child the best chance at a healthy, confident smile as they grow.

Benefits of an
early consultation

Since young teeth and jaws are still developing, it is much easier to intercept issues early on that may become a problem in the future if ignored. By performing an early orthodontic assessment at our clinic in Norwest and Tallawong we can:

  • Reduce or eliminate the need for tooth extraction

  • Encourage correct jaw growth and avoid the need for future jaw surgery

  • Correct harmful oral habits

  • Progress speech development

  • Simplify and shorten treatment time for future orthodontic treatment

  • Increase the stability of final treatment results

  • Guide permanent teeth into alignment

  • Preserve or create space for erupting permanent teeth

  • Identify upper airway obstruction and problems related to mouth-breathing

  • Create facial symmetry by influencing jaw growth

  • Reduce the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth.

Treatment for teens

Treatment
for teens

The teenage years are a common time for young people to get braces. During adolescence, a teenager's teeth have not yet stabilised (this happens around 20 years of age), meaning teeth are much easier to move to their desired position!

At the Bachmayer Orthodontic Clinic, we have a range of orthodontic treatment options for our teenage patients. You can choose braces that blend in with your natural tooth colour or have some fun with colourful elastics! Invisalign®* for teens is also a great discreet option for active teens.

Orthodontist Dr Helen Moon in Norwest and Tallawong

Dr Helen Moon, Specialist Orthodontist Sydney

Orthodontic Specialist
Dr. Helen Moon is an orthodontist who has taken the scenic route to perfecting smiles. After earning her Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours) from the University of Queensland, she moved halfway across the globe to complete a Master of Science in Orthodontics at the University of Manitoba. She's now qualified as a specialist orthodontist in Australia, Canada, and the USA because why settle for one country when you can have three?

Her research has been featured at international conferences, and she's a fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and a member of the AAO (American Association of Orthodontists) and CAO (Canadian Association of Orthodontists).

Dr. Moon is passionate about providing evidence-based, personalised care, with a special interest in digital orthodontics and clear aligner therapy. She has also completed the Aligner Intensive Fellowship, an advanced training program in aligner treatment, ensuring her patients benefit from the latest techniques in orthodontic care. With a knack for spotting the little details that make a big difference, she loves helping patients achieve smiles they’re proud to show off.

During her time in Canada, Dr. Moon embraced the cold with skiing, chasing the northern lights, and surviving temperatures that could freeze your eyelashes. Now back in sunny Sydney, she’s swapped snow for sand and spends her time playing tennis, scuba diving, and enjoying life without five layers of clothing.
