Are braces covered in Australia? Medicare, funds and payment plans

Braces Covered in Australia

If you are planning braces or Invisalign® in Australia, understanding how to pay for treatment can feel confusing. Does Medicare help? What do private health extras cover? Can you spread costs with a payment plan?

This guide explains how orthodontics is usually funded, where Medicare may contribute in limited situations, and how to make the most of private health extras. We will also outline our interest-free options at Bachmayer Orthodontic Clinic so you can map a plan that suits your family.

How Medicare fits into orthodontic care

In most cases, Medicare does not cover orthodontic treatment such as braces or Invisalign®. Routine assessments, appliances, and ongoing orthodontic visits typically sit outside Medicare benefits.

There are exceptions for medically necessary care connected to hospital treatment or surgery. For example, if you require orthognathic jaw surgery due to severe skeletal discrepancy, Medicare may contribute to the surgeon, anaesthetist, and hospital components. Orthodontic treatment that prepares your teeth for surgery or finishes the bite afterward is usually not covered, though your hospital-based items might be. If you are unsure, we can coordinate with your oral and maxillofacial surgeon and provide item numbers for you to check with Medicare and your health fund.

For children, there is no general Medicare program that pays for braces. Some families may be eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule through a dentist for basic dental care, but this does not extend to comprehensive orthodontics.

Private health extras for orthodontics

Private health extras cover can contribute to orthodontic treatment if your policy includes orthodontics. Each fund and policy is different, so it is worth checking the details before you start.

Key points to review:

  • Waiting period: Orthodontics often has a 12 month waiting period. You must hold the correct level of cover for the full period before claiming.
  • Lifetime limit: Many policies have a single lifetime orthodontic limit per person. This is the total you can claim across your lifetime, not just per year.
  • Annual or periodic limits: Some funds release the lifetime limit in stages each calendar or financial year. You claim a portion in year one, then another portion in the next benefit period.
  • Percentage vs fixed benefit: Policies may pay a percentage of fees up to a cap, or a set dollar amount per visit or per stage.

If your plan has staged benefits, you can often improve your rebate by timing payments across two claim years. We commonly help families structure their payment schedule to claim part late in one year, then the remainder early in the next, subject to your fund’s rules and waiting periods.

Timing claims across calendar years

With many funds resetting extras on 1 January, careful timing can help you draw from two annual allocations. A typical approach is to start near the end of the year after your waiting period clears, then schedule subsequent payments early in the new year. If your fund runs on a financial year cycle, we can plan around that instead. The goal is to stay inside your lifetime limit while accessing more than one annual slice of benefits.

Our Treatment Coordinators can provide item numbers and a proposed schedule so you can call your health fund and confirm exactly what applies to your policy. We keep the process simple and transparent.

Interest-free plans at Bachmayer Orthodontic Clinic

We offer 0 percent interest plans, including DentiCare, to help spread orthodontic costs over time. Plans are automated by direct debit for convenience and can be set weekly, fortnightly, or monthly. Options can extend for up to two years depending on the treatment provided.

Typical examples we see:

  • Weekly plans from around $60 to $80 with an initial deposit for suitable cases
  • Fortnightly or monthly instalments that align with your pay cycle

Exact arrangements vary with your treatment plan and any health fund contribution. We will present clear options after your Specialist Orthodontist assessment, so you can choose a schedule that fits your budget.

What this looks like in real life

Imagine your policy has a lifetime orthodontic limit released in annual portions. If you begin treatment in November and your fund resets on 1 January, you might claim an initial benefit at the start, then claim the next portion in January. Your interest-free plan can be set up to bridge the gap between fund benefits and your overall fee. This approach avoids rushing and allows steady, predictable payments.

If you are considering aligners, our team can discuss Invisalign® programs alongside braces. You can start with a free in-house aligner assessment at our Norwest clinic, then finalise your quote after a Specialist Orthodontist consultation.

Coordinating complex care

For combined orthodontic and surgical treatment, we plan your braces or aligners around your surgeon’s timeline. Medicare may contribute to hospital and surgical items, while your private health extras could assist with orthodontic fees if your policy includes orthodontics. We provide itemised quotes and coordinate with your surgeon so you can confirm benefits in advance. If you are researching jaw surgery or persistent TMJ-related bite issues, you can read more about how we coordinate care and evaluations for orthognathic needs on our site.

Quick FAQ

  • Are braces covered by Medicare in Australia? Medicare generally does not cover braces or Invisalign®. Limited benefits may apply to hospital and surgery items when jaw surgery is medically necessary, but the orthodontic component is usually not covered.
  • Does Medicare cover braces for kids? No. There is no program that makes comprehensive orthodontics free for children under Medicare.
  • Can kids get braces for free in Australia? Not typically. Some state-based or public dental pathways can vary, but comprehensive private orthodontic treatment is usually self-funded or supported by private health extras with orthodontic cover.
  • How do private health extras work for orthodontics? If your policy includes orthodontics, you may claim up to a lifetime limit, often released in annual stages after a waiting period. Benefits can be percentage based or fixed-dollar amounts.
  • What payment plans are available at your clinic? We provide 0 percent interest plans, including DentiCare, with weekly, fortnightly, or monthly instalments. Typical weekly arrangements can start around $60 to $80 with a deposit, subject to your treatment plan.
